The hottest new release the weekend of September 22, 2023, Stop Making Sense, actually came out almost 40 years ago. But this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Talking Heads’ seminal concert film on the big screen isn’t the only worthwhile thing to watch. If you’ve come for other streaming recommendations, this must be the place for them, too. Stop Making Sense
Stop Making Sense, directed by Jonathan Demme, is widely considered to be one of the best concert films ever made — if not the best. Thanks to A24, Talking Heads fans will have a chance to experience a newly remastered version of the movie in theaters. A limited-run Imax release begins this today, but if you can’t make one of those jumbo-sized screenings, fear not: David Byrne’s Big Suit will also still look exceptionally big on a normal movie screen, too. —J.G.

Well, well, well … look at the Expendables franchise doing what the M3GAN sequel lacked the courage to do. The latest installment of the old-timer action series promises to be Sylvester Stallone’s final mission with the world-saving team. (Jason Statham is more than capable of picking up the reins.) Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture reprise their roles from past movies, and the newcomers include 50 Cent, Megan Fox, and Tony Jaa. —J.G.

Dan Harmon’s latest series swaps the sci-fi antics of Rick and Morty for the mythological madness of ancient Greece. Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, and Hannah Waddingham star, as do a host of other well-known comedians and voice actors who play the various mortals, gods, and fantastical creatures trying to run a city that, as the title may have suggested, is kind of crappy. —J.G.

Love Is Blind season five
Netflix’s flagship reality show feels like it’s only getting better and better with each new season. In season five, the show returns to Texas as it hits up the Houston dating pool, guaranteeing some real mess. It’s just a really great season of reality television. —Savannah Salazar
Grand Finale
Sex Education season four
One of Netflix’s most underrated comedies is coming to an end, but at least it’s at its own volition (as far as we know). After starring in the biggest movie of the year, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, and Connor Swindells return to Sex Education for its final season along with Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson, as most of the Moordale Secondary crew move to a new college. It’s a sweet and poignant ending to what’s been a ridiculously fun surprise of a series. —S.S.
Make It a Double Feature
John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch
We could have recommended any number of Talking Heads–related titles for a double feature this week, including David Byrne’s Broadway show American Utopia — the Spike Lee-directed film version of which is streaming on Max. But, ultimately, we’re going with John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch, which features Byrne doing a duet with a little girl who wants everybody to pay attention to her at her mom’s party. Director Emma Seligman’s second feature film proved to be audacious, bloody, and a whole lot of fun. After having a strong showing in theaters, Bottoms is heading for digital platforms, so you can watch Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott be lovable dumbasses over and over again. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo left the sewer for their latest well-liked big-screen adventure, but now, just under two months after Mutant Mayhem premiered in theaters, they’re going back into the sewer. In this metaphor, streaming is the sewer. The good news is it’s never been easier to catch the heroes in a half-shell. —J.G.
